For the past 10 weeks I have been undertaking a placement at Thames Tideway Tunnel, West Section through the ICE QUEST Scholarship with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. Working on a project such as Tideway has been an intriguing and rewarding experience that I will take with me through the remainder of my university studies and future career.

Since my arrival the team has been extremely welcoming and eager to assist in expanding my knowledge and skillset, providing an enjoyable environment in which to work.

Taking part in QUEST has enhanced my evolution as an engineer and the lessons I have learned during my time with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure have been invaluable to my development both professionally and personally.

My role as a graduate engineer is to learn and develop my skills with applied experience. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has given me the opportunity to get involved with a variety of projects across different sectors - it’s hard to beat the practical skills you gain from being involved onsite and working with knowledgeable engineers.

Despite minimal industry experience at the time of joining the company, I felt welcomed to contribute and encouraged to spend time finding out what works were happening on the project. During my placements, I got involved with engineering, environmental and safety aspects of the onsite works which enabled me to get a better understanding of the people and processes that are required. I also enjoyed interacting with other graduates and valued the time and effort of the HR team to ensure I was well-equipped to take on my role.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on placement at the Peak East VIP project and learned skills you could never learn in a classroom. The on-site experience has given me a great insight into what the job is like, and has inspired me to work even harder and cemented my long term goals.

Having done three summer placements with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure in different areas of the business, I have learned how the same skills can be applied to different situations. My placements have all been very rewarding, and they provide extremely important experience as there is a lot that university can’t prepare you for.

The number of projects going on at one time means there are numerous opportunities to get involved in huge, exciting projects all over the UK. It’s challenging, but in a good way – I’m learning every day.

I think that the people you work with make such an impact on your happiness at work, and the network at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure makes work more enjoyable. It can be very daunting starting a new job, but everyone is very supportive and happy to help.

I learned a lot on my three summer placements with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, and with each I found I became more confident in my abilities. My placements within the Energy and Water business units were tailored to my level of experience, which meant my responsibilities increased with each one – starting off aiding in design reviews, and moving on to supervising works onsite, writing my own risk assessments, and conducting site surveys. My placements really enabled me to consolidate my knowledge from university.
