I have just completed a four-year Level 3 apprenticeship in electrical installation and maintenance and now I am excited to be embarking upon a Level 6 electrical technical support engineer degree apprenticeship. My career has got off to a great start with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and last year I was proud to be named Best Apprentice in our colleague recognition awards.

I got to know Morgan Sindall Infrastructure through the Energy Coast University Technical College in Cumbria. Whilst studying there, I was lucky enough to be part of the Bridge Project, a simulation of how major projects are delivered from inception to completion. The positive experiences and relationships I established throughout my time working with people on this project influenced my decision to choose an apprenticeship with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.

My new apprenticeship will enable me to broaden my experience by working in the Quality team. Over the next five years, I will spend one week each month studying for my degree at the National College for Nuclear. This new role will be office based yet I have been well supported by my colleagues in the transition from being on site to my new working environment. Whilst completing the core elements of my apprenticeship, I will also experience working in different business functions, where I can interact and learn from the people around me which supports my personal development.

When I was 17, I realised that A-Levels weren’t the best career path for me as I wanted to get some real work experience within the construction industry. I made the decision to pull out of my A-Levels and look for an apprenticeship programme where I could gain on-the-job experience. My local council held a construction job shop, where they mentioned some available apprenticeship opportunities on the Barking Riverside project, which was local to me. The opportunities were with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and as I started reading about the project, I was fascinated. They seemed like a great employer, with lots of exciting opportunities. I applied for the apprenticeship programme as a Buried Service Technician (level 3) and after some time, I was offered the role. That’s where my career at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure began.

My onboarding experience was very exciting and interesting. I was exposed to lots of new experiences which really opened my eyes to all the different aspects of the construction and infrastructure industry. I was supported by all my colleagues and met with a warm welcome to the business.

During my apprenticeship, I gained countless valuable professional skills including CAD (Computer Aided Design), BIM (Building Information Modelling), health and safety inspections and tours, reading and understanding CAD drawings, locating underground utilities and much more.

The support from my colleagues was amazing! They were always helpful and friendly and willing to answer any questions I had, no matter how many I had!

Ever since I started my career as an apprentice at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, the business has provided me with countless opportunities to develop and grow. It is a great place to work, with challenging projects and friendly colleagues. After completing my apprenticeship as a Buried Service Technician, I was promoted into the role of a BIM Coordinator. After spending two years as a BIM Coordinator, I have recently been promoted again to an Information Manager.

One of the biggest challenges I overcame during my time with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure was my lack of confidence. I started working for Morgan Sindall Infrastructure when I was 17, being fresh out of school with little life experience meant I lacked industry knowledge. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has given me the chance to develop and grow my skills and education, which has helped me feel much more confident.

In my current role as an Information Manager, some of the things I enjoy most include problem solving, communicating, being able to make a difference on a project by ensuring we are compliant with the relevant legislation (ISO 19650) and completing technical activities such as clash detection and CADQA’s, whilst also being constantly challenged and busy!

My team comprises of three people (including myself), we are very close knit and work well together. Between us, we support all the projects in the Rail business unit. This allows us to get involved in lots of amazing projects.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure sets itself apart in the way it prioritises sustainability and staying ahead with innovative technologies. The company also actively engages with communities, prioritises safety, and has a strong track record of successful projects. I have had the chance to go to numerous schools and events with the business to help educate students about the great things we do as a business.

The company culture at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure greatly reflects the company’s values. The culture allows for an inclusive and diverse working environment with trustworthy and friendly colleagues who all work incredibly hard. I witness the hard working and friendly culture daily within the company.

My recent promotion to Information Manager is one of my proudest moments to date. An equally proud moment for me is when I was shortlisted for an Allstars Award in the Best Trainee, Apprentice or Graduate category within the Rail business unit. My team has also recently been nominated for the Innovation and Business Change Allstars Award.

I think apprenticeships are a great option for those that are looking to achieve their qualifications whilst gaining valuable work experience in an industry they are interested in. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is a great company that can really help to build your professional and personal skills. I’m glad I took the route I did; it is the perfect place for me to continue progressing my career, hopefully for years to come!

I started my career working in the hospitality sector. I was responsible for placing orders, liaising with suppliers, and invoicing. This experience made me realise that I would like to pursue a career in finance. After some online research, I discovered the Morgan Sindall Infrastructure apprenticeship scheme and was attracted by the wide range of opportunities available.

I am now a Level 3 apprentice working in the Rail team. The theory element of my apprenticeship focuses more on sales ledger whereas I mostly work in purchase ledger, but both are very similar in their own right, the only difference being the need to reverse the entries, and this has given me a greater understanding of both sides. The most rewarding part of my role is being able to see how I am making a valued contribution to the business.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has a mentoring programme to support all learners and an apprenticeship manager who helps to develop our career, advising on any challenges we encounter. In addition, my line manager has always been very helpful in offering me advice with exams and feedback on the work I had to do for my course.

My experience with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure as an apprentice has been amazing and I would recommend the company to anyone else considering an apprenticeship.

I was attracted to Morgan Sindall Infrastructure because it’s a large business with extensive capabilities, which would present exciting opportunities and the chance to work on major schemes.

My career journey began in 2015, completing Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships in Construction Site Operations. I then joined a Level 4 Construction Site Engineering Technician apprenticeship; this involved completing a HNC in Civil Engineering at Solent University in Southampton. I attended lectures one day each week to learn what was required to complete coursework and exams. Completing the Level 4 apprenticeship also meant I could apply for EngTech MICE professional membership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). I now proudly use these letters after my name! I’m also proud to have won the ICE Jean Venables Medal 2001 for the presentation that I gave as part of my ICE EngTech professional review.

I’m currently enrolled on a Level 6 Construction Site Management (degree) apprenticeship at Coventry University which includes a BSc in Construction Management. It can be challenging to juggle my work, learning and home life but Morgan Sindall Infrastructure supports me, offering solutions to carry out my role to the best of my ability. I wouldn’t have gained the experience I have today if I’d chosen another route early in my career.

When I left school, I was more tempted by the opportunity to earn whilst I learn, and kick start my career in my chosen field rather than go to university. For me, an apprenticeship offered the best of both worlds.

I am studying for my apprenticeship at the University of the West of Scotland whilst working in the Morgan Sindall Infrastructure Energy team on the Killin Visual Impact of Scottish Transmission Assets project located in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. I am lucky enough to work in some of the most beautiful landscapes in Scotland.

My role as a site engineer involves setting out for the various activities taking place on site, looking after the work gangs and taking as-built points on the installed features. I also look after the ordering and quantities of material required for the job. It’s great to be able to put the theory I am learning at university into practice on a live site. I now have four years of site experience which puts me in a strong position. What I enjoy most about my role is setting something out then seeing it built, this makes me feel part of the project. I also feel like a valuable part of the team and my colleagues are very supportive - they are always on hand to help me with my university work if I need it!

Ravinder joined the apprenticeship programme in Digital Engineering (level 3) at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, shortly after completing his GCSE examinations. The programme enabled him to gain hands-on experience while working on the Fusion HS2 Enabling Works project.

The shift in pace and intensity from leaving school to going into employment and managing a study programme presented quite a challenge for Ravinder. To prepare for this, he worked closely with his Training and Development Manager (TDM) to coordinate his study programme and work in the most efficient way possible, He was able to use his time management skills to achieve the optimum balance, allowing time to study, work and enjoy his home life in equal measure. He also started a self-driven programme of research and conversations with his HS2 colleagues.

“I asked as many questions as I could, to understand and contribute. My goals were to embrace learning, settle quickly and achieve clarity around what my working life would look like and to enhance my knowledge in areas which sparked my curiosity.”

Ravinder used the organisational skills he gained during his apprenticeship programme, to bring himself up to speed on HS2. He explored GIS software to start mapping the project, environment, create as-built drawings and gain a multitude of operational information. His apprenticeship enabled him to accommodate the constant change of the project. He had learned to collate information quickly and accurately for the project teams. He was soon delivering training to improve access and use of the software to its maximum capacity.

In March 2022, Ravinder joined the Highways sector, supporting the Information Management team. He was responsible for all framework information client management for a major contract. Through being consistently communicative, responsive and committed, he built great working relationships early in his career. His passion in Information Management led to the completion of his third year in his Digital Engineering apprenticeship at the beginning of 2023.

Ravinder is now responsible for Information Management of our Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) National Highways projects. He continues to develop his software and technology skills and contribute to the delivery of innovations and improvements, through effective use of new and emerging technologies. He is also undertaking a Level 6 apprenticeship in Geospatial Mapping and Surveying Sciences Degree, at the University of East London.
