About the role –

We have a fantastic opportunity within our EnergyWater business for an ambitious and talented Senior Engineering Manager UCG.

  • Support design manager and project teams with technical details of cable installation. Advise on type registration, understand cable production and testing requirements, understand and support cable procurement and FAT testing.
  • Liaise with the installation teams, civils teams, designers and multidisciplinary team to achieve required project outcomes and have experience of how the UGC installation process works from tender through to commissioning.
  • Support the cable installation requirements on a number of projects.
  • Support commercial and procurement function  (Cost Value Reporting, review payment application, variation registers, etc).
  • Support the Energy Sector with Tenders & Business Development, attend client meetings and undertake preliminary site visits.
  • Check/review and comment UGC designs.
  • Check/review and comment on Joint bays for buildability.
  • Check/ review and comment on Detailed UGC Designs, and associated aspects for buildability .
  • Preparation of UGC installation proposals and stage by stage/sequencing of cable installations, technical reports, specifications and other written documents.
  • Adherence to Morgan Sindall management procedures, IMS, Client technical specs and legislation.
  • Establish best practice and produce procedures in order to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare and review method statements and risk assessments including checking.
  • Provide experience to support value engineering and innovative development.
  • Accept ownership of work to be done (i.e. being required to undertake specific actions within an agreed job boundary, the execution of a delegated task, activity or process).
  • Support Graduates and staff to develop experience in UGC works.
  • Support design teams on access requirements and working platform locations. Working platforms managed by TWC. (PM and SEM to ensure role is appointed)
  • Manage and coordinate recycling activities relating to Excess UGC cables.

 

About the Technical Skills and experience

  • Member of professional Engineering Institution such as IET. Either Incorporated or Chartered engineer.
  • Experience in the technical review of all designs, calculations, reports & drawings associated with the new build or refurbishment of Underground Cable  projects from 11kV – 400kV for constructability purposes. (transmission projects)
  • Knowledge of Wayleaves and planning requirements for cable install.
  •  Understanding of constraints such as Archaeology, environmental considerations and landowner interfaces. Able to support designers and civil engineers select suitable construction swathe for cable systems.
  • Ability to support FAT testing requirements and Support Commissioning engineers to energise system.
  • Knowledge and working experience of XPLE cables (Cross linked Polyethylene Extruded) 33KV – 400kV, Knowledge of FFC (Fluid Filled Cables) 33kV to 400kV, PPL-FFC (Paper polyethylene laminated) 275kV and 400kV, MIND (Mass Impregnate Non Draining up to 33kV) and GIL Gas Insulated lines.
  • Experience with Cable pulling and pulling tensions needed to install HV cables, able to consult with design organisations and cable suppliers to ascertain best cable / value for task, including ensuring suitably type registered.
  • Understanding and experience of transporting cable on public roads, offlloading cable and transport of cable on site.
  • Able to support manufactures and designer enable type registration where required.
  • Knowledge and experience of Joint bay construction, including use of Temporary works used in Joint bay builds.
  • Knowledge and experience install DTS and fibre blowing for DTS (Distributed temperature sensing)
  • Understanding of National Grid Technical Standards and supplier requirements and understand needs of cable installation minimum requirements, such as type registration of cables, marker boards, or minimum standards of CBS for example.
  • Experience with SEC and gantry and able to work in controlled areas as a person or competent person.
  • Knowledge of Induced voltage risks, electromagnetic fields and working room required around OHLs.
  • Experience with access track requirements and usage to construct UGC works and Joint bays.
  • Experience in either CAD packages such, AutoCAD,  trimble sketchup.
  • Have a good understanding of British and European Standards and technical specifications from utility providers such as National Grid, SSE, Scottish Power, UKPN, WPD, etc
  • Reasonable level of maths and science and have good communication skills.
  • Good computer and report writing skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft word, excel, adobe and other mandatory systems
  • Write and produce inspection and test plans, and provide support to the quality engineers, ensure quality process are adhered to, to meet ITP and client requirements.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team.
  • Good attitude to obtaining new skills and capable at transferring existing skills to overcome new challenges.
  • Have experience in using Common data environments (CDEs) such as Viewpoint for projects or other similar ISO19650

 

About the Qualifications

  • BEng/Bsc in Electrical Engineering or relevant engineering qualification (preferably a Master’s degree or working towards) with minimum 10 years’ experience in UGC construction and management experience
  • Preferably Chartered Civil/Structural Engineer/Electrical
  • Ideally be TP137 Approved for site management
  • Have undertaken “persons” and “Competent Persons” training
  • Have SMSTS
  • Have CSCS/CPCS card. (A.P. for craneage desirable)
