Project:
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is working in partnership with National Grid on the Electricity Transmission Partnership in the NorthWest Region. This programme is focused on delivering substation and transmission works that will enhance the resilience of the electricity network and support the UK’s energy transition.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager with recent substation experience to provide leadership across engineering delivery. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of internal and external engineering resources, ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and in line with project requirements.
Your role will cover both pre-contract and delivery stages, working closely with customers, consulting engineers, in-house teams, and operations directors. You will be a key point of contact for engineering issues, supporting tenders, ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards, and driving innovation across the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage engineering resources to meet project requirements
- Input into all engineering activities at pre-contract and delivery stages
- Identify temporary works and allocate resources appropriately
- Act as point of contact for customers and liaise on engineering matters
- Ensure training, competency, and compliance records for staff are maintained
- Support mobilisation of new contracts and contribute to health, safety, quality, and environmental planning
- Manage relationships with consulting engineers and in-house teams
- Provide design management oversight and implement design agreements
- Drive innovation, knowledge sharing, and lessons learnt across the business unit
- Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and support audits and reporting
- Represent Morgan Sindall at industry forums when required
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
You will have strong technical leadership experience within substation projects and a proven ability to manage engineering teams at a senior level.
You will bring:
- Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline
- Chartered Engineer status (e.g. ICE, IET, or equivalent professional body)
- Significant recent experience in substations; LCDAE appointment in Substation Primary or Protection & Controls is desirable
- Proven experience in design management and assurance within major infrastructure projects
- Senior-level involvement in large project tender teams, including price and quality adjudications
- Knowledge of commercial aspects, contracts, and procurement models
- Experience of managing assurance regimes, surveillance, and audits
- Track record of managing design processes in both tender and delivery environments
- Collaborative working experience with joint ventures, alliances, or similar delivery models

About the Energy Business Unit
We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.
Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair and refurbishment services.
