Job description
This is a senior technical role responsible for delivering defined mechanical engineering and construction tasks in accordance with company procedures and industry standards. Operating within a structured framework, the individual will exercise autonomy in managing their workload and making discipline-specific decisions under the direction of senior management.
The role involves supervising trade teams and delivering mechanical engineering and construction services across site-based projects. It encompasses full accountability for the delivery of mechanical construction activities within a designated geographical area, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards, while optimising resource use and controlling costs.
As a Senior Project Engineer, the individual will lead the mechanical scope of one or more projects, overseeing design development, procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, commissioning, and documentation. They will represent the construction team in integrating work package scope to meet overall project requirements, with specific expertise in manufacturing methodology, installation techniques, and quality assurance. The role also includes supporting programme planning and commercial activities, ensuring alignment with project objectives and customer expectations.
The individual will support the Construction Manager as required, and contribute to SL gated process activities, constructability programmes, HAZCON, contract and risk management exercises, ensuring outputs are embedded in construction strategies. They will also assist in discharging CDM duties and ensure compliance with all relevant safety, environmental, engineering, and customer standards.
Responsibilities
- Lead and assure the mechanical scope of work across design, procurement, manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover stages.
- Represent the construction function within the project team, integrating work package scope and contributing to SL gated processes, constructability reviews, HAZCON, HAZOP, HAZCOM, CDM duties, and risk management activities.
- Provide oversight and assurance from a constructability perspective, ensuring designs are fit for purpose and compliant with contract requirements.
- Manage the supply chain to deliver fit-for-purpose work scope to agreed plans, meeting or exceeding baseline cost and schedule targets without compromising safety or quality.
- Support project management and procurement teams in scoping, supplier selection, quotation evaluation, and subcontractor management.
- Assure and/or produce key project deliverables including scope documents, cost and schedule estimates, Work Specification Forms, Safety Method Statements, Work Safety Plans, and Tender Packages.
- Implement and maintain progressive assurance programmes for mechanical-biased manufacturing and installation stages.
- Monitor and influence schedule performance through planning, review, and adjustment of mechanical work package schedules to meet project milestones.
- Ensure mechanical systems conform to applicable legislation and standards, supporting the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations to enable UKCA / CE Marking.
- Coordinate and control mechanical activities including testing, commissioning, routine maintenance, defect management, and process operation, supervising subcontractors where required.
- Maintain accurate progress reports and records for safety, contractual, and quality purposes in line with the PPP Collaborative Management Plan.
- Deliver all works in line with the Perfect Delivery model, achieving safety, quality, schedule, and customer satisfaction targets.
- Ensure SQEP requirements are maintained for all personnel involved in manufacturing and construction activities.
- Promote a safety and environmentally conscious culture across all staff and subcontractors.
- Provide line management, coaching, and development for team members.
- Proactively develop and manage customer, stakeholder, and partner relationships to ensure satisfaction and repeat business.
Requirements
- Minimum of a BTEC HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), ideally with experience in complicated precision machinery.
- Demonstrable experience in mechanical engineering and product delivery through design, procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, commissioning, and setting to work stages.
- Experience with machine installation, pipework, HVAC systems, and integration with electrical systems.
- CITB Site Managers Safety Training Scheme.
- CSCS Site Supervisor
- Proficient in materials and subcontract letting and subcontract management.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety and environmental legislation.
- Sound understanding of construction contracts, procedures, and practices.
- Effective operational planning and time management skills; able to manage multiple projects without compromising standards.
- Ability to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and standards.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop others.
- Specialist knowledge in mechanical engineering and construction delivery.
