After 18 months of improvement works to tackle congestion and ensure smoother journeys for motorists, our Highways team has completed the M1 junction 23 and A512 scheme in Loughborough.

The project consisted of upgrading the single carriageway to dual carriageway, installation of a new roundabout and the remodelling of several junctions. It also included new traffic installations in addition to widening the slip roads - all through the Midlands Highway Alliance Plus Medium Schemes Framework 3 on behalf on Leicestershire County Council.

Highly commended

The team has worked closely with the county council to complete the scheme and the outstanding teamwork was acknowledged as ‘highly commended’ at the Highway Awards 2020. Judges agreed that the partnership work excelled in many areas, especially community engagement, which led to many local people welcoming the project and understanding its value.

Throughout work on the scheme, there was much engagement with the local community. Our team took part in various projects, including creating a herb garden for a local special school, fundraising for a nearby hospice and collecting toys for both the hospice and Shepshed toy library as well as providing a defibrillator for the local area. Engineering students from Loughborough University took part in seminars and a site visit and several virtual placement weeks were held for students at Loughborough College and Iveshead School.
